Health and Human Services
In 2010, at the 37th National Assembly, The Links, Incorporated established the Health and Human Services facet. The goal of this facet is to promote and facilitate programs that support the maintenance of good health and the elimination of chronic health disparities in communities of color through education, health advocacy, and optimal utilization of health resources. The North Shore Chapter has developed and spearheaded program activities designed to provide lasting behavioral changes resulting in healthier individuals and communities.
Programs have included: co-sponsoring health fairs; dental screenings for children; hosting community symposiums addressing mental health and heart health. The Chapter is very proud of their holistic programming efforts toward combating childhood obesity that garnered recognition from the Central Area and The Links, Incorporated.
In 2021, the North Shore (IL) Chapter was one of 36 chapters in the Central Area that piloted, Black K.A.R.E. (Kidney Awareness Resources and Education) aimed at addressing racial disparities in chronic kidney disease. The North Shore Chapter provided public service awareness information via social media campaigns and partnered with the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois to provide community-based programming to Evanston residents via two faith-based groups. In 2022, the Chapter was awarded a second Black K.A.R.E. grant.
Strategic community partners include Family Focus-Evanston, McGaw YMCA, St. Francis Hospital, American Heart Association, Colgate Dental Van, Sharpe Kids Foundation, and the Erie Evanston/Skokie Health Center.
According to the National Institutes of Health Black Americans are almost four times as likely as White Americans to develop kidney failure.
While Black Americans make up about approximately 13 percent of the population, they account for approximately 35 percent of the people with kidney failure in the United States.
